Donald Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen predicts that if Trump loses the election in November, he will resign during the lame duck period so that Mike Pence can take over and pardon him for his crimes. Cohen says this Nixon-like scenario was likely discussed between Trump and Roger Stone as a way to avoid any potential prison time. Certainly, Trump has committed crimes during his presidency and before that deserve the attention of prosecutors. Whether they would actually charge him with anything is a different story.
This ties into the bigger picture idea that regardless of who wins the election, the following weeks and months could be a very dark period in our nation’s history. People will take to the streets if they sense the election was rigged or if all of the votes weren’t counted. Trump could very well deny that he lost and try to stay in power. What we’ve seen from this president is that he will stop at nothing to further his own interests. If that means resigning early so that Pence can preemptively pardon him, Trump would be willing to do that.
