British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that he will be resigning as a result of a number of scandals including him attending parties during the COVID-19 shutdowns. Johnson’s own party, the Conservatives or “Tories,” wanted to oust their leader who has been dealing with sagging approval ratings and mass resignations within his own ranks. Boris was defiant at first and vowed to stay in power, but today he made the decision that it was best for him to step down. Johnson said at 10 Downing Street, “it is clearly now the will of the parliamentary Conservative Party that there should be a new leader of that party and therefore a new prime minister . . . the process of choosing that new leader should begin now and the timetable should be announced next week.” It could be months before the next prime minister is chosen, therefore this won’t be an immediate stepping down from the embattled British prime minister but good to see nonetheless.
