Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke confronted incumbent Governor Greg Abbott about the recent school shooting in Uvalde and it led to him being marched out of the room by police officers. O’Rourke has long been a champion for gun safety regulations and he appeared legitimately furious with the Republicans’ unwillingness to do anything about the issue. After providing a few remarks, Abbott was ready to turn the microphone over to Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick when Beto interrupted from the crowd. This prompted Abbott’s entourage to shout him down and say he’s “out of line and an embarrassment” for making the shooting a “political issue.” O’Rourke kept speaking his mind and was ultimately escorted out by police officers. Outside of the building, Beto spoke to the media and said that for all the talk about mass shootings being a mental health issue, the state ranks last in the nation in mental health services. Some are calling this an example of Beto grandstanding to get votes in the upcoming governor’s race, but he was absolutely right to do what he did to draw attention to how Republicans are utterly ineffective on this issue.
