Despite the risk of looking like a political actor, Attorney General Merrick Garland says that he is open to prosecuting Donald Trump if the evidence points in that direction. NBC News anchor Lester Holt sat down with Garland for an interview and asked him whether he has to consider the risk of “tearing the country apart” in the decision of whether to indict the former president. Garland responded, “we pursue justice without fear or favor. We intend to hold everyone, anyone who is criminally responsible for the events surrounding January 6th or any attempt to interfere with the lawful transfer of power from one administration to another accountable. That’s what we do. We don’t pay any attention to other issues with respect to that.” So long as we can take Garland at his word, there does now seem to be a real possibility of Trump getting prosecuted for his role in the “big lie” and the Capitol riots.
