Sonali Kolhatkar speaks with Geo Maher, Visiting Associate Professor at the Department of Political Science, Vassar College, and a Senior Research Fellow, Global Centre for Advanced Studies. He is the author of five books, including We Created Chavez, Decolonizing Dialectics, Building the Commune, Spirals of Revolt, and, his latest book, A World Without Police: How Strong Communities Make Cops Obsolete
The 2020 uprisings for racial justice sparked many questions about the violence that police have wrought on Black and Brown communities for generations. It also sparked on a nationwide level, via the slogan “Defund the Police,” the radical idea of abolishing police altogether.
While many books have been written on the problems of policing to make a case for abolition, there are few that actually tackle what abolition could look like. One of them is a new book by author Geo Maher called A World Without Police.
Rising Up with Sonali is a radio and television show that brings progressive news coverage rooted in gender and racial justice to a wide audience. Rising Up With Sonali was built on the foundation of Sonali Kolhatkar's earlier show, Uprising, which became the longest-running drive-time radio show on KPFK in Los Angeles hosted by a woman. RUS airs on Free Speech TV every weekday.
