Recent polls show Donald Trump’s approval rating is collapsing among independents, a key voting bloc in US elections. While Trump's support remains strong within the Republican Party, polls from ABC News/Ipsos and CNN indicate that a majority of independents believe Trump should have been charged with a crime and that he intentionally did something illegal. The ABC poll shows that Trump's approval rating among independents has dropped four points, from 29% to 25%, since the indictment. The CNN poll shows that 62% of independents approve of the indictment. The drop in approval ratings among independents is particularly concerning for Trump since it suggests he can easily win the primary but that he’s likely to lose again in the general. Despite some Republicans saying that the indictment has made them more likely to vote for Trump, it appears that these are previous Trump voters whom he’s won back, rather than new supporters.
