A number of Republican candidates wiped mentions of Donald Trump from their websites after winning their respective primaries and needing to pivot to the general election. One example is Bo Hines, who’s running for a US congressional seat from North Carolina. Hines had a picture of a grinning Trump on his website before winning his primary, but now almost all references to the ex-president have been scrapped a month out from the midterms. At least five House Republicans in battleground districts have done something similar. This signals a clear awareness that Trump is detrimental to these Republican candidates if they’re trying to defeat Democratic opponents. While these candidates were able to defeat fellow Republicans by hitching their wagons to Trump, the former president is so extreme and divisive that he becomes a liability in the general election.
