Hurricane Ian has devastated Southwest Florida in what’s being regarded as one of the strongest storms to ever hit the United States. Winds of over 150 miles per hour made landfall first near Fort Myers, Florida, wiping out beaches, and flooding homes and streets all across the gulf coast. Nearly three million people are without power, with many deaths feared to be recorded in the coming days. President Biden has declared this a state of emergency and Governor Ron DeSantis has praised him and said, “when people’s lives and their property are at risk like this, you know, we all need to work together regardless of party lines.” DeSantis said about the storm, “The amount of water that’s been rising, and will likely continue to rise today even as the storm is passing, is basically a 500-year flooding event.” Sadly, with climate change, these types of extreme weather events can be expected to happen with regularity.
