Sonali Kolhatkar speaks with Chuck Collins, senior scholar at the Institute for Policy Studies where he directs the Program on Inequality and the Common Good. His books include 99 to 1: How Wealth Inequality is Wrecking the World and What We Can Do About It, and Born on Third Base: A One Percenter Makes the Case for Tackling Inequality, Bringing Wealth Home, and Committing to the Common Good. His latest book is The Wealth Hoarders: How Billionaires Pay Millions to Hide Trillions. He advised numerous journalists working on the Pandora Papers.
The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists just released the results of what is considered to be the largest investigation in journalism history. The “Pandora Papers,” consist of about 12 million internal documents from 14 different law firms and other companies that set up offshore bank accounts, trusts, and holdings. In addition to the dozens of world leaders, politicians and celebrities that are named, the Pandora Papers also sheds light on the U.S. as a growing offshore haven.
According to the ICIJ, “206 U.S.-based trusts linked to 41 countries holding combined assets worth more than $1 billion. Nearly 30 of the trusts held assets connected to people or companies accused of fraud, bribery or human rights abuses in some of the world’s most vulnerable communities.”
