Yet another strategy for Donald Trump and his campaign team to overturn the results of the 2020 election has surfaced based on reporting from Bob Woodward and Robert Costa’s upcoming book, Peril. A lawyer representing Donald Trump’s 2020 election campaign named John Eastman allegedly sent a two-page memo to Mike Pence ahead of January 6th outlining steps the then-Vice President could take to interfere with the electoral vote counting process. The letter suggested that Pence could say there were competing electors in the seven states Trump’s team took issue with, allowing him to throw out the votes from Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia, Arizona, Nevada, Wisconsin, and New Mexico. In that scenario, the final vote tally would be 232 votes for Trump compared to Biden’s 222 and Pence could rule Trump and himself elected for a second term. The scenario was first provided to Pence on January 4th, based on this reporting, and the former VP was skeptical of the plan. According to CNN, Trump told Pence over the phone, “you really need to listen to John. He's a respected constitutional scholar. Hear him out.” On the morning of the 6th, Pence told Trump he would not be following through with the plan, prompting Trump to say, “you don't understand, Mike. You can do this. I don't want to be your friend anymore if you don't do this.” Later on at his DC rally, Trump told his supporters, if Pence “does the right thing, we win.” Luckily Pence did what was actually the right thing on that day, because if he chose not to there would have been a serious constitutional crisis unfolding for the country and maybe four more years of Trump.
