Gay USA 5/27/20

On Gay USA 5/27/20:

Gay USA guest co-host and bird watcher Chris Cooper (pictured) tries to get a woman in Central Park to put her dog on a leash and she calls the cops on him, saying an African American man was threatening her. Chris is OK but it did not end well for her. He joins us at the top of the show for an exclusive interview.

∎ As we pass 100,000 dead in the US from COVID-19, Dr. Deborah Birx—who now shills for Trump—is criticized for her AIDS work by the State Department’s Inspector General.

Nita Pippins, a southern mom who became mother to many gay men with AIDS in New York after it took her son in 1990, has died of COVID-19.

∎ Same-sex marriages get underway in Costa Rica, the eighth Latin American country to legalize it.

∎ The gay-themed “God’s Own Country” was censored to make more money but the director gets the sex scenes restored.

Our guest for our last fifteen minutes is veteran TV producer Joe Lovett who will talk about his documentary “Gay Sex in the 70s”—streaming free on June 1—and how he produced the first network news magazine piece on AIDS in 1983 on “20/20.” Links that and to more of Joe's productions are below in our Culture section.

Gay USA, the longest-running LGBT news show in history, offers comprehensive news and analysis by and about the LGBTQ community. The program features lively repartee between hosts Ann Northrop and Andy Humm, as well as interviews with special guests. Our goal each week is to keep our viewers up-to-date on the latest developments in the LGBTQ+ community in the United States and abroad.  With decades of experience in journalism and activism, we work diligently to provide historical context for the stories we cover. We strongly believe in LGBT liberation, but we aim to be fair to those who oppose us. Gay USA works to provide a critical perspective on the groups within our movements working to change things.
