Steve Almond wrote an excellent commentary for WBUR about how as shocking as it is that Donald Trump lied about coronavirus, the real thing to be horrified by is that it won’t matter. As Almond points out, Trump’s approval numbers will barely budge, if at all, based on the revelations that he knew about the severity of coronavirus early but downplayed it. The story will circulate for a week or so and then the media will move onto something else, as is what happened with last week’s story about Trump calling American war dead “losers” and “suckers.” Regardless of what Trump does and what comes out, he will remain at around 40-45% approval.

Ultimately this election will come down not to the country realizing that Trump is bad and the US is currently a laughing stock. Rather, this election will come down to who can turn out the vote and the amount of voter suppression that takes place. The remaining Trump supporters will stay with him until the very end. Nearly all of the national polls show Joe Biden as the preferred candidate over Donald Trump. We just have to make sure Biden supporters vote and get their votes counted.
