A concerted effort is happening to restrict voting rights around the country. The non-partisan Brennan Center reports that at least 14 states have already passed 22 laws that block access to the ballot. These bills range from limiting mail-in voting to restrictive voter-id laws.
This Republican-led effort is built on the Big Lie of voter fraud and is targeted at mostly voters of Color who turned out in record numbers in 2020.
Right now, the Senate is considering the For the People Act, which would strengthen voter rights by outlawing partisan gerrymandering of congressional districts and would make it easier for all voters to have their voices heard. But its passage in the Senate is far from assured.
Voter suppression impacts us all, and voters of color disproportionately. With the 2022 midterm elections looming, so much is at stake.
