It turns out that Truth Social, Donald Trump’s new social media site, has many of the same restrictions that other social media platforms have. This normally wouldn’t be an issue, however, Truth Social is marketed as a “free speech” alternative to sites like Twitter and Facebook, which right-wingers deem to be too censorious. On Truth Social, a post can be taken down for intellectual property infringement, sensitive content, privacy violations, doxxing, and other reasons. With all of these restrictions, it doesn’t appear that Truth Social has any value as a social media app since it has many of the same rules as its competitors with far fewer users. Perhaps that’s why Trump himself only got around to posting his first “Truth” last week. The former president wrote, “I'm BACK! #COVFEFE.” With the news of Elon Musk buying Twitter and the likelihood that Trump will be able to return to the platform soon, this new venture has even less of a point than initially imagined.
