“Suicide Is Preventable”: Public Health Advocates Push to End Stigma After Parkland & Newtown Deaths

PTSD and survivor's guilt can build on depression or anxiety and leave people more vulnerable to self harm, says suicide prevention expert Kelly Posner Gerstenhaber. For the Parkland survivors, some may need continued treatment, not just trauma counseling right after the shooting, she says. "We know when you add that on top of a baseline mental health issue like depression or anxiety, the risk goes up even farther."
