Rest in peace, Maya Angelou

The amazing Maya Angelou has died at the age of 86.

As her obituaries will surely reflect, it’s impossible to sum up Angelou’s work under a single label — or three. She was a poet, writer, activist, singer, actress, dancer, director. She was a teen mother and San Francisco’s first black female cable car conductor. She once said, “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” And in that she’s clearly succeeded.

Here she is reading her poem “Still I Rise.”
