President Obama Issues "Juneteenth" Proclamation

 On Tuesday, President Obama issued a proclamation commemorating "Juneteenth," which is the annual remembrance of the formal end of slavery in the American south.

Juneteenth is an official holiday in 42 states, celebrated on June 19 by many African-Americans.
In the year 1865, Union General Gordon Granger announced general order #3 which read: "The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer.”
