Jim Kenney, the Mayor of Philadelphia, is being attacked for saying he looks forward to the day he’s no longer in charge of the city so he doesn’t have to stay up late at night worrying about gun violence. Following last week’s Fourth of July parade shooting in Highland Park, Illinois, Kenney was asked about mass shootings by a reporter. He said, “there’s not an event, or a day where I don’t lay on my back and look at the ceiling and worry about stuff. So everything we have in the city over the last seven years, I worry about. I don’t enjoy Fourth of July, I don’t enjoy the Democratic National Convention, I don’t enjoy the NFL draft. I’m waiting for something bad to happen all the time. So I’m looking forward to when I’m not mayor and I can enjoy some stuff.” Some people are taking these comments to mean Kenney is not grateful for the position he holds or should step down immediately. But given how he clearly cares about the people of his city and takes the job seriously, it’s hard to take issue with what he’s saying.
