Gay USA 12/23/14

Same-sex marriages will commence in Florida on January 6th.   At their January 9 conference, the US Supreme Court will discuss whether or not to take any marriage cases.   The US Justice Department will fight discrimination based on gender identity as sex discrimination.   Illinois advances the rights of unmarried partners.   The Michigan “license to discriminate” bill is stopped—for now.   Normalization of US relations with Cuba. Good for the gays?   Government sponsored thugs in Zimbabwe beat participants at gathering of LGBT activists.   In China, a gay activist scores a historic victory in court.   Andy reviews a new British import, Every Brilliant Thing, at the Barrow Street Theatre.   And we have some special holiday videos to share with you—“Being Stavros,” a short film by Jonothan McLeod about a 400-lb. man’s quest to be Mr. Gay UK, and another about gay cowboys in Australia. All that plus Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas” as performed by the crew of Her Majesty’s Ship Ocean.   ANDY’S THEATRE REVIEW:  Every Brilliant Thing, at the Barrow Street Theatre in the Village through March 29, stars British comedian Jonny Donohoe in Duncan MacMillan’s play about a man whose mother attempted suicide when he was 7 years old and how he coped by making lists of every brilliant thing he can think of from ice cream to, eventually, sex as the list metastasizes over the course of his life. I went with my actor friend Anthony Johnston who said it was better than anything that he has seen on Broadway this season and I pretty much agree save for “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.” So treat yourself to this life affirming and funny show—and start making your own list of what makes life worth living.
