Fox News contributor Dr. Janette Nesheiwat made the case last week that there should be steps in place before gender-affirming care can be provided to trans individuals. She said, “we know that some people will benefit from transitioning to gender-affirming care, but we want to do it the right way. And that starts off with taking a history and a physical, maybe doing blood work, getting counseling and therapy, not rushing to hormones and irreversible surgeries that might have long-term consequences are irreversible.” This assessment by Dr. Nesheiwat is the correct one, but what she leaves out from her analysis is that this is already what is going on. The Fox audience has been led to believe that any patient can go into a hospital and right away get sex reassignment surgery. In reality, there is a process and it’s rather similar to the one laid out by the Fox News doctor.
