Bolivia’s New Regime Tries to Move Past Morales

Sonali Kolhatkar speaks with Medea Benjamin, co-founder of the human rights group Global Exchange and the peace organization CODEPINK. She is a long-time political activist who has also written a number of books. She just returned from a trip to Bolivia.

Bolivia’s new interim regime headed by interim self-declared President Jeanine Añez is attempting to settle in. Signing a deal to call back military forces from patrolling and attacking protesters, Añez has also announced new elections to take place without former President Evo Morales who was forced to step down. She has also annulled the results of the last race he won.

Meanwhile, protests continue around Bolivia with hundreds of thousands of Morales’ supporters marching to demand his return and many mourning the killings of protesters. Hundreds of activists and scholars in the US have signed onto a letter saying, “We condemn the violence in the strongest terms, and call on the US and other foreign governments to immediately cease to recognize and provide any support to this regime.”
