Bernie Sanders has a hard stance against white-collar crime. He thinks it is completely unacceptable that the United States would jail kids for smoking pot, while letting Wall Street crooks walk free after they rob the nation of millions.
“One of the biggest mistakes our government made after the financial crisis was not prosecuting the people responsible for the greed, recklessness and illegal behavior that crashed our economy and ruined the lives of millions of Americans,” Bernie Sanders told theHuffington Post. “It is not acceptable that many young people have criminal records for smoking marijuana, while the CEOs of banks whose illegal behavior helped destroy our economy do not.”
We have long known that criminal prosecutions of individuals responsible for financial misconduct is necessary. Yet, under Eric Holder, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has refrained from such prosecutions.
While the statute of limitations has run out on prosecuting most crimes that were committed during the crisis of 2008, the DOJ stated that it will now pursue white-collar criminals at an individual level.
Surveying the field of candidates, as they stand today, the only one that may actually get tough on Wall Street thugs is Bernie Sanders.
