Senator Lindsey Graham introduced legislation this week that would institute a federal ban on abortion after fifteen weeks. Graham said about this, “I think we should have a law at the federal level that would say that after 15 weeks, no abortion on demand.” This proposal comes just weeks after Lindsey said that the abortion issue should be left up to the states and months after the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade. In one sense, it logically follows that Graham would try to do this because Republicans want to capitalize on the recent win they had on the abortion issue and see how much more ground they can pick up. However, this could easily backfire on Republicans with the midterms being right around the corner and the majority of Americans wanting abortion to be legal in most circumstances. Luckily, this particular bill has no chance of becoming law but in a future Congress with more Republican representation, anything is possible.
