Brave women in Saudi Arabia are literally driving through their government’s prohibition against DWF (driving while female). Here’s a video mocking the sexism behind the ban. And don’t worry. You can laugh. Because it’s made by someone who is actually from Saudi Arabia.
The video, which has English text and Arabic subtitles, is a cover of Bob Marley’s No Woman, No Cry. This time, the song is called, No Woman, No Drive. The parody, created by Saudi Arabian comedian Hisham Fageeh, shatters not only stereotypes about gender, but about culture. Fageeh says, ”If I’m being ambitious, I’d like … for people to think that Arabs and Saudis can joke and they can laugh. I think that’s what is really important to us – that people abroad understand that.”Katie Halper started identifying as a feminist at the age of 5 when she attended her first pro-choice rally and began calling out the musicals she watched instead of cartoons for being “prejudiced against women.” She realizes this is a ridiculous photo.
