Alvaro Garcia Linera is one of Latin America's leading Marxist intellectuals. His life is marked by a deep commitment to the struggles of indigenous peoples and the working classes of Bolivia. From an early age he steeped himself in thought of Kant, Hegel, Gramsci, Nietzsche, Marx and Lenin. In the early 1980's he studied at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City and became a mathematician. in the 1990's he spent 5 years in prision for promoting an "uprising of the communities" and was released in 1997. While imprisoned, he studied sociology. After his release he worked as university professor, political analyst. He was elected Vice President as the running partner to Evo Morales in the 2005 and 2009 presidential elections. He is the author of numerous books and articles including, The Working class condition, Sociology of the social movements,The plebian power, Geopolitics of the Amazon: Patrimonial-Hacendado Power and Capitalist Accumulation and "State Crisis and Popular Power"
