San Francisco is a popular tourist destination but an expensive city in which to live. A couple of hundred dollars a month make a huge difference for the hotel workers, so they went on strike to protest the unfair labor practices.

GRITtv: The F Word: Equality March Shows What Grassroots Can Do

See video

The National Equality March on the D.C. mall Oct. 11 drew one hell of a crowd. If for-profit media had given each equality marcher the air time dedicated to the 60,000 or so teabaggers that came to D.C. a month ago, they'd still be hogging the airwaves, dawn to dusk. Most reports estimate Oct. 11's turnout at 100-200,000. We might have learned that the march was organized by locally-focused, nationally-connected activists representing every race, class and faith.Imagine what we'd learn, given half a chance.

The Long Walk to Freedom

See video

"The Long Walk to Freedom" documents how 12 ordinary people from different racial and economic backgrounds came to accomplish extraordinary deeds which changed the face of the nation during the Civil Rights Movement to protest racial inequality, segregation and discrimination in the 1960s. The film demonstrates that the struggle of civil rights, justice and equality is indeed a "long walk" - an ongoing challenge requiring the participation of successive generations. And it shows how ordinary people can get involved in social change.
