GRITtv: Salvador Reza: Fighting Sheriff Joe

See video

Sheriff Joe Arpaio is a household name for all the wrong reasons. Known for accusations of racial profiling and immigration raids in Maricopa County, Arizona, Arpaio is held up as a hero by anti-immigrant groups but has created a climate of fear in his state, where the Latino community is afraid to call the police for common complaints for fear of deportation. Recently stripped of his federal authority to make immigration arrests, Arpaio continues to conduct raids and appears not to fear repercussions.

See video

Esmeralda came to the U.S. seeking asylum from her native Mexico. She tried twice to enter the country legally, each time forced into detention. As a transgender woman, she was segregated and subjected to abuse from guards on her first attempt, and when she tried again, she was held with male detainees. Eventually, her claim was successful and today she works as an advocate for others who have survived sexual violence. In this video from Breakthrough, she tells her story of speaking out against abuse.

GRITtv: Whose Health Do We Care About?

See video

With the astounding vote on the health care reform bill in the House this weekend, progressives were forced to consider what kind of compromises were worth making for health care. When certain people are excluded from health care simply because of who they are, how "public" would even a public option be? Tammy Johnson of ColorLines asks these questions and more in this commentary.

GRITtv: Torn Apart: Deportation Destroys Families

See video

From ColorLines, the national magazine on race and politics, we have a story of the unintended consequences of deportation. The U.S. citizen children of immigrant parents are often left stranded when those parents are deported, often for misdemeanor offenses. A 1996 law made deportation mandatory for those convicted of any number of offenses--after they've already served their terms. "Double punishment" is bad enough, but what about the children who are left without their primary means of support?

GRITtv: Hey CNN, Choose: Lou Dobbs or Latinos in America

See video

Even Geraldo Rivera thinks Lou Dobbs is an embarrassment to journalism. That's pretty impressive. Dobbs has built a reputation by bloviating against so-called "illegal aliens," praising vigilante groups like the Minutemen and even declaring that Mexico is now the enemy. Yet CNN appears to think that by broadcasting a special on "Latinos in America," it can make up for the fact that it gives Dobbs a platform to pontificate against immigrants. Well, the Basta Dobbs campaign isn't buying it, and we aren't either. Check out their video with our own Laura Flanders, and then take action!

GRITtv: Roberto Lovato on the Basta Dobbs Campaign

See video

A push to force Lou Dobbs off the air was launched this week. Roberto Lovato, founding member of presente.org, talks about why Dobbs is the most dangerous man in America for Latinos. You can find out more about the campaign at bastadobbs.com. Media Matters has also launched an effort to force Dobbs to resign.

One year on from the sinking of Lehman, and the conventional wisdom seems to be that we’ve moved away from the precipice. But not everyone is so sure. If anything has been preserved, if not enlarged, it is the deep inequalities of American capitalism. Not only that, but are the necessary regulations in place to prevent a second storm? Discussion with David Cay Johnston, author of "Free Lunch: How the Wealthiest Americans Enrich Themselves at Government Expense."

GRITtv: Breakthrough Films' 'Restore Fairness'

See video

It's odd that the Bush administration legacy evokes so much literature: sometimes Orwell's 1984, other times Kafka. This next piece belongs to the latter: from Breakthrough Films, here is "Restore Fairness," which looks at the harrowing lack of due process in America's immigration detention policies.

GRITtv: Obama's "Civil Detention System"

See video

The Obama administration has said that it wants to create a ?truly civil detention system.? Orwellian or earnest? Aarti Shahani founder of Families for Freedom and lead author of the Justice Strategies report, ?Local Democracy on ICE? discusses the Obama administration?s plan and the closure of the T. Don Hutto detention center in Texas.

GRITtv: The F Word: Equal Protection is Better Than Beer and Dialogue

See video

The National Council of La Raza, a top Latino civil rights group, is taking a shot at RNC chair Michael Steele and several prominent GOP figures for skipping its ongoing annual conference while Democrats are basking in the contrast. Having nominated the first Latina to the Supreme Court and sending no end of speakers to the La Raza conference, they're in like Flynn with Latino voters, they hope. But things are not so simple. The day after the La Raza affair there was another gathering in NY, and Latinos came out in big numbers.
